The Ondo state commissioner for health, Dr. Wahab Adegbenro is leading the campaign against Lassa fever in the state as part of efforts to combat the spread of the disease in the state.
One of the latest in the round of his campaigns is the visit to the Four Square Gospel Church, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) road, Akure, Ondo State on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
In his message to the large congregation, the commissioner told the members of the congregation that Lassa fever was a treatable disease and the treatment in Ondo state was free – the only state in Nigeria that does that.
He said from diagnosis to discharge, the state government picks up the bill and even feeds the patients. He then encouraged the people that there was no need to hide suspected cases of Lass fever. Anyone who has a fever should immediately visit the nearest health facilities for evaluation, the commissioner charges.
He further noted that dirty environments, coupled with bush burning and poor food preservation practices were helping to spread the disease. He said Lassa fever was transmitted by rodents, especially those with many breasts (multimammate) and that any contact of infected rodents with our food can serve as an entry point for the virus into humans.
He noted that the Ondo State government was spending a huge sum of money to treat the infection and thus encouraged the people to appreciate the good gesture of government by ensuring they actively took steps to stop the spread of the disease in the state.
The commissioner reeled out good practices that could help to prevent the spread of the disease which included regular washing of hands, proper and hygienic protection of both cooked and uncooked foodstuffs and environmental cleanliness.
He also advised the congregation to spread the message to others noting that the visit to the church was strategic because the FUTA area had three confirmed cases of Lassa fever.
The commissioner thanked the leaders of the Four Square Gospel Church for the opportunity to use their platform to spread the word against Lassa fever and urged them to pray for the country and in particular Ondo state against the spread of infectious diseases.
