Sex-enhancing Drug Misuse Linked to Rising Incidence of Penile Fractures

A growing trend of penis fractures among young Nigerian men has raised concerns among urologists, who attribute this alarming increase to the rampant misuse of sex-enhancing drugs. The worrying phenomenon is not isolated to Nigeria; it reflects a broader global issue, where most online pharmacies operate illegally, selling potentially dangerous or ineffective drugs, including those marketed as sex enhancers.

Consultant Urologist Dr. Gabriel Ogah expressed deep concern over the rising number of cases, stating that in his four decades of practice, the past four years have seen more penis fracture cases than the previous 30 years combined. This surge is primarily linked to the unregulated use of drugs like tramadol, which is typically prescribed in doses of 50 to 100 milligrams for pain relief or conditions such as premature ejaculation. However, many young men are self-administering up to 1,000 milligrams, ten times the recommended dose, in pursuit of prolonged erections.

Dr. Ogah, while speaking with PUNCH Healthwise, highlighted the influence of societal pressures and the misconception fueled by pornography, noting that the quest for exaggerated sexual performance has led to the misuse of drugs. “Sex is not just about performance; it’s about intimacy, connection, and pleasure,” emphasized Dr. Emmanuel Eze, another consultant urologist, adding that many men mistakenly believe sex enhancers can cure all sexual problems, unaware of the serious side effects and potential for addiction.

Understanding Penile Fracture

A penile fracture occurs when the corpus cavernosum, a spongy tissue inside the penis, tears due to trauma. Although rare, it is a medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

This injury often happens during sudden blunt trauma or when the erect penis bends sharply. The tunica albuginea, a tough outer layer, can break because it becomes very thin and stiff during erection. The fracture may affect one or both corpora, and in some cases, the urethra may also be injured. Urethral damage is more likely if both corpora are affected.

Proper evaluation and treatment are crucial to prevent complications and ensure recovery.

Sex Enhancers Misuse and Consequences

The misuse of sex-enhancing drugs not only leads to physical injuries like penile fractures but also has long-term health consequences, including the risk of permanent impotence. The experts stress the importance of public education on the dangers of unsupervised drug use, the need for realistic sexual expectations, and the importance of seeking medical guidance for sexual health issues.

The widespread availability of sex enhancers, often through illegally operated online pharmacies, contributes to this trend. Dr. Eze Warned, “Men who use sex enhancers can become dependent on them, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems.”

The alarming rise in penis fractures among young men in Nigeria, attributed to the misuse of sex-enhancing drugs, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unregulated drug use and the importance of prioritizing sexual health through informed choices and professional medical advice.
