The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed a Chinese supermarket in Abuja for allegedly selling unapproved goods, including products labelled in Chinese language without proper notification.
According to the agency’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shaba Mohammed, who also chairs the Federal Task Force on Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, the supermarket, situated at Azba Mall, 2 Durban Street, Wuse 2, Abuja, was closed down following the agency’s receipt of ‘credible information’ about the store.
“We are going to investigate why over 90 per cent of the goods in the supermarket are labelled in a foreign language and how they got into the country,” Mr Mohammed stated, emphasizing that selling items in foreign languages violates NAFDAC’s regulations. He further noted that some of the affected goods had expired and were still on the supermarket’s shelves.
The NAFDAC director explained that the agency would scrutinize the supermarket’s warehouse to prevent the sale of some products. He also mentioned that the owner of the supermarket will be invited for further investigation before the agency concludes the case.
According to Mohammed, if the supermarket is found culpable of violating NAFDAC’s regulations, the agency would take punitive action against it, which may be administrative.
